The Supervising Scientist Branch is part of the Department of the Environment and Energy’s Heritage Reef and Marine Division; it was established to ensure protection of the Alligator Rivers Region of the Northern Territory from the impacts of uranium mining, and does so by undertaking research and developing standards and practices for environmental protection.
The Supervising Scientist Branch (SSB) manages one of Australia's most extensive historical environmental monitoring data sets, dating back over 40 years, with ongoing research and monitoring continuing to expand this data set.
The SSB previously held a single ESdat Desktop licence for the management of a subset of data, but saw the potential for a broader implementation based on ESdat Server.
The ESdat solution adopted by SSB comprises:
This ESdat solution provides the following benefits:
SSB Project Manager, Amie Leggett had this to say:
“The ability to efficiently interrogate data from multiple projects allows for improved research outcomes and continued environmental protection of one of Australia’s most pristine landscapes.
The roll-out of the broader ESdat license has been fantastically facilitated by the EScIS team to ensure a smooth transition and successful uptake across multiple teams”
