All site data entered into ESdat either needs to be, or has the option to be, associated with a Location via the specification of a Location Code.  A Location Code can be given co-ordinates and other information that always apply to a particular Location.

Sometimes Locations may be automatically generated in the database, such as if a user selects the "Create Missing Parent Records" import option when trying to add data (such as lab results) for a Location that wasn't already entered.

 

Locations and co-ordinates can be imported by:

•        Using the "Import" menu - used if importing a list of locations and co-ordinates, such as from a surveyor

•        Clicking on the map in ESdat - used if you know the approximate location, and have a basemap.  This option is only available when looking at the "Locations" view in ESdat.

 

In the SQL Server version of ESdat all co-ordinates are converted to Latitude and Longitude, so long as the site uses a known co-ordinate system.  This allows mapping of points across all sites irrespective of the co-ordinate system being used.
