ESdat is supplied with a range of Environmental Standards for various countries. The original document with Environmental Standards is provided, along with the extract for import into ESdat. The original document is transposed directly, without interpretation so that users can be confident in the data, and can edit the ESdat extract if required. The ESdat extract is always presented in either csv or Excel format and can be edited in Excel.
There is a difference between how the Access and SQL versions of ESdat manage their Environmental Standards Library.
SQL Server Version: |
If using the SQL Server version of ESdat you will be presented with a list of Environmental Standards already loaded into your system. You can simply select the standards you wish to use. To add another standard click "Load new Guidelines" and you will be prompted for an Environmental Standards File. |
Access version |
If using the Access version of ESdat you will need to import the Environmental Standards on each new project, unless they are already included in your "New Project Template" |
When loading an environmental standard the file will initially be loaded into an Import Template where it can be reviewed, and if necessary, edited with required changes. The environmental standard is then imported using the normal import functionality.
Loading an Environmental Standard•Open ESdat. •Go to the ‘Import’ View, and on the ‘Files’ panel click on ‘Environmental Standards’. •Navigate to the Environmental Standards file. Typically, your environmental Standards will be stored at \\YOUR COMPANIES SERVER\ESdat\Environmental Standards\, but the location may vary, depending on how ESdat was installed. The file must be in an ESdat format. •Select the file that relates to the standards you want. The file should then open up in Excel.

A typical Environmental Standard ready for import may contain multiple sheets as well a ‘combined compounds’ functionality. For some Standards, you may also see a ‘Wizard’ open to assist in importing the Standard. The Wizard will provide an additional preliminary step to select environmental standards where the guideline is more complex and some decision making may be required prior to use of the standard. The Environmental Standards Import template contains some new field names. These include:
•‘Action Level Source’ provides the name of the particular Environmental Standard that is being used (in the example shown above, this is NEPM 1999 HIL F). This name will appear on graph and chemical table outputs.
•‘Action Level’ is the level above which action needs to be taken. A result equal to and higher than this action level would represent an exceedance of a trigger level or environmental guideline/standard.
•‘Action Level Min’ is the level below which action needs to be taken. A result equal to and lower than this action level would represent an exceedance of a trigger level or environmental guideline/standard.
•‘Units’ describes the unit used to measure the standard (in this case mg/kg). Enter the appropriate units for your particular needs. Note: if the standard does not appear as expected, use the ‘Check Units’ facility within ESdat to check for any conversion errors.
•‘Leached’: For leached samples, the ‘Leached’ value must be set to ‘True’, and the Matrix Type set to the original matrix (normally soil).
•‘Comments’ is used for information such as an explanation of an acronym or a reference for the site specific standard. Information in this field can be included on Chemistry Output Tables.
Review the file and add any comments or changes, if required.
Once any required changes have been made, the file is ready to import; click import.
Environmental Standards that have been imported into ESdat can be configured for Order and Description under Data Tables - zRef_Environmental_Standards_Config.
