I would like to be able to use an altnernate name name in the chemistry lookup instead of the chem name in the SChem1 query.

The reason is to match up the reported name with the name specified in the regulations.

Is there any way to make this happen?

The only way to do this is to change the “Chem Name”.  If you are using the SQL Server version of ESdat you can have different “ChemProfiles” which can use a different ChemName for each Chem Profile, and you can select the Chem Profile you wish to use.

The Alternate Chem Name is only used for reconciling different versions of the same name when searching for a ChemCode during import.
