Hi ESdat,

Sometimes we have a problem inputting the SampleCode automatically generated by the lab. ESdat relays on error that the SampleCode is too big. It's a usually a merger between the Labcode-Date-Sample Name.

What is the maximum number of characters that it will take? If that can be known, we can impliment a maximum number in our work methods.

Thanks.

Hi Ryan,

This refers to the Historical or Field Imports I expect?

The maximum length for the SampleCode if 40 characters.  You can alter which fields get presented by default under Setup - Chemistry - Chemistry Sample Fields Shown.  Alternatively, you can edit the excel formulae when importing the data (the default formulae is automatically generated based on selected fields used in the import templates).  The only requirement for the SampleCode is that it is unique for each sample, the content is of secondary importance.

Regards,

Warwick

Hi Warwick. It's for new chemistry data that the lab has sent recently. It's for a site that we used descriptive words for the sample (Sediment sample near pipeline) rather than borehole locations (BH01). So the lab would have generated a samplecode as "L55555.08/09/2010.Sediment sample near pipeline". We kept the field.ID as is, but had to manually change the samplecode. Either the labs have to generate a smaller samplecode (just labcode and sample name?), or our samplers needs to be aware of the limits of ESdat in our internal work methods. Both will work.

Hi Ryan,

That is fine to keep the Field ID as is and edit the SampleCode (both in Chemisry Samples and in Chemistry Results).

This isn't something that has come up more than a couple of times across all the users, that I am aware of, so I don't think you need to be that concerned about it.  We can look at lengthening the field if it does become a problem.

If you can mention to the field staff that the FIeld ID be kept a bit less verbose, and if that is acceptable, then that is obviously the best.

Regards,

Warwick

Hi Warwick. As you said, it doesn't happen much. I'll mention to staff. Thanks.
