SampleCode format

Hello, The ESdat specifications state that the SampleCode should be contructed as: [Lab_Report_Number]_[LabSampleID]. It also states that each sample should have a unique SampleCode even when reported in a different report. This is contradictory - every report must be uniquely identified, so different reports always have different numbers. Is it sufficient to use LabSampleID as the SampleCode? Cheers

Hi, Often client samples already have the Lab Report Number as part of the Lab Sample ID. In this scenario there is no need to duplicate the Lab Report Number at the begining of the SampleCode. The reason for [Lab_Report_Number]_[LabSampleID] in the specification is predominantly for Lab QA samples which can often be used in multiple reports. This includes MS, Lab_D, etc. If you were to just use the LabSampleID in this scenario, this means you may repeat the same SampleCode across multiple reports which would cause duplicates when trying to import the Lab Reports (and it would not load). For example if you have a matrix spike with LabSampleID 123456MS and this QA sample was reported in Lab Report 35462 and Lab Report 35463 with the same SampleCode, whichever Lab Report was uploaded second would give a duplicate sample error and not upload.
By prefixing the Lab Report Number, you will get two unique SampleCodes (35462_123456MS and 35463_123456MS) and both reports will upload successfully with no duplicate errors.
I hope this clarifies things for you. Thanks, Nick
