Corruption in ESdat-Shapefile Labels on export - Location of template shape?

Folks, Running 4.4.16 and Arcmap 10.2.2 When I export the labels as a shapefile i'm noting that the field LOCATION_COC is coming in as junk with chinese characters - eg LOCATION_CO关繷縚⛾兠숴#焋兢��翫縚셰#ࢹഌ Means the labels dont display without mucking about with shape file first. Im guessing one possible cause is that the source shape file has become corrupted. Where is this thing stored ? Also any other thoughts as to cause?>
