Hi

I've read some previous forum posts about plotting bicarbonate concentrations in Piper Plot diagrams but haven't found an answer to this question yet.

The Piper Plot function in ESdat uses ChemCode 71-52-3 (Bicarbonate as CaCO3) when plotting bicarbonate concentrations. However, Piper Plot diagrams require bicarbonate concentrations being plotted as HCO3-. I had wondered if the Piper Plot function undertook this conversion itself but after experimenting I don't think it does. Based on this, the Piper Plots would be underreporting the actual bicarbonate concentration because they have not allowed for this conversion which applies a factor of approximately 1.22.

Hi Maddie,

71-52-3 is the CAS number for "Bicarbonate Ion", not "Bicarbonate as CaCO3".  

You can check this on various sources, but also look at our central list of ChemCodes

If you have a ChemName of "Bicarbonate as CaCO3" for ChemCode "71-52-3" you should review the OriginalChemName for that ChemCode in your source data and make sure that is consistent with the ChemName being used in your zRef_Chemistry_Lookup table (Access versions of ESdat) or zRef_Chemistry_Lookup_Profiles (SQL Server versions).
