Entering coordinates from mobile in field not accurate

Hi all,
For a site I have set up the sample locations under their monitoring zones, for easy identification at site via Bing Maps in the office before heading to site. I wanted to pinpoint the site location exactly using the geolocation mode on my phone once I get to site. I tried doing this the other day but the coordinates were completely off, showing my location as on the road 50m away instead of on top of my test pit.
Has anyone else had this issue and managed a way around it?

Hi Jennifer, The ESdat Field Portal gets the co-ordinates from your devices GPS and then plots those co-ordinates on BING maps. The most likely reason the point is not mapping where you expect is that the devices GPS couldn't get an accurate position, which can happen from time to time, you can see this sometimes on your phones mapping apps such as Google Maps.
The other possible reason is that BING maps is not accurately georeferenced it that location, but it would be unusual for it to be that far off. Assuming that another field visit to get more precise co-ordinates isn't possible and you are only after approximate coordinates your best bet may be to visually place the point in the correct spot on the map. There is a tool to do that in the Field Portal. Warwick
